On Wednesday, October 30, 1907 Galveston experienced severe thunderstorms resulting in at least one tornado striking the island. While there were approximately 24 serious injuries, only one person, Mrs. Elizabeth Naudasher, died. Over 50 homes were partially or wholly damaged and the majority of these were south of Broadway and west of 36th Street. Many of the homes were raised on 15-foot piers awaiting the grade raising. For more detailed information about the severe weather, see the Galveston Daily News, Thursday, October 31, 1907, page one.
The Galveston Relief Fund was established to aid those citizens who suffered heavy property damage. The committee was composed of Rev. John Murphy, Rabbi Henry Cohen and Rev. R. M. Hall, while John M. Murch acted as the Treasurer.
