One time Commander of Terry’s Texas Rangers, Wharton, 1828-1865, was born in Nashville and brought to Galveston as a child. He attended the University of South Carolina and, in 1848, married Penelope Johnson, daughter of the Governor of that state. In 1859 Wharton was elected district attorney for the First judicial District of Texas.
He entered the Confederate Army as Captain of Company B, Terry’s Texas Rangers. Wounded at Shiloh and Murfreesboro, Wharton also participated in the Bardstown and Chickanauga campaigns, and became major general in 1863.

Papers are correspondence, general orders, biographical sketches and letters of introduction from the Civil War career of Wharton. The 1925 correspondence of Rosenberg Library accepting the donation of the papers is included.
