Paul H. Naschke

A Galveston native, Paul Naschke's photograps became part of the Galveston landscape. His most famous work was a collection of photograps taken after the 1900 Storm that documented the destruction of the city through his personal vision.
In the 1920s, Naschke turned to portraiture, and this exhibit features portraits taken by Naschke during the 1923, 1926 and 1927 Mardi Gras balls.
Paul Naschke's wife, Della, was responsible for the colors seen on the photos. Della used water colors to enhance black and white photographs, producing the results see today. In additon to posing the subjects and adjusting the lighting during settings, Della worked on touch ups using a soft carbon pencil to remove wrinkles.
