The 1900 Storm resulted
in the loss of up to 300 feet of Galveston’s shoreline along the Gulf of Mexico.
Bathhouses and attractions were destroyed. Only pilings remained as mute evidence
to the structures that were once on the beaches. Further inland, blocks of houses
that were near the Gulf were swept away, creating a zone of total destruction.
The Galveston Daily News, September 13, 1900, lamented: “And the beach? That
once beautiful beach with its long stretches of white sand – what had become
of that? …Shoreward as far as the eye could reach were massive piles of houses
and timbers, all shattered and torn.”
