The hurricane damaged or destroyed businesses of every kind in Galveston. Winds and water ravaged their buildings, machinery, and stocks. Businesses that survived included the Merchants’ and Planters’ Compress and Warehouse Company, which sustained approximately $25,000 in damage. The Texas Star Flour Mills received light damage to its elevator. However, the Galveston Shoe and Hat Company’s building was nearly completely destroyed, with losses of more than $50,000. The machinery inside the Galveston Cotton and Woolen Mills, which was for sale at the time of the Storm, sustained damage.
