Churches of every denomination
sustained damage or destruction during the 1900 Storm. Sacred Heart Church,
where 400 people sought shelter during the hurricane, was gutted. Its twin spires
remained standing as perhaps the most evocative symbol of the Storm’s wrath.
St. Patrick’s Church lost its steeple, which crashed through the church’s roof
as it fell. Yet, in the days after the Storm, services continued there. As the
authoritative post-Storm account, Galveston in 1900, noted, “The Holy Sacrifice
is offered at one of the altars still remaining, with blue sky for a canopy,
the rays of a semi-tropical sun beating down on the worshipers, and the winds
of heaven whistling around the altar.” The south wall of Trinity Episcopal Church
collapsed. First Baptist Church was destroyed. Rabbi Henry Cohen of Temple B’nai
Israel, which sustained minor damage, allowed the Baptist congregation to hold
its worship services at his synagogue. Every African American church in Galveston,
fourteen in all, was destroyed.
