The hurricane played havoc with Galveston’s harbor front. Wind and water destroyed sheds and left piers strewn with debris. Cargoes awaiting export, such as cotton bales, were ruined. The hurricane drove large vessels ashore. One of them was the British steamship Kendal Castle, which found herself in shallow waters off Texas City. Sailing vessels capsized or were cast aground.
