The city’s medical buildings were located in the East End, where the tidal surge reached its greatest depth. At the Medical Department of the University of Texas, the Ashbel Smith Building lost its dome, leaving a large hole in its roof, and windows. Brackenridge Hall lost its roof, and its skylight fell into the main dining room. John Sealy Hospital was more fortunate: Slate tiles were blown off its roof, and several windows were destroyed, but otherwise the facility came through unscathed. St. Mary’s Infirmary, which was a refuge for many fleeing the hurricane, lost its roof and windows.
