In the zone of complete destruction (see Map), over 2,600 houses were destroyed. An additional 1,000 residences were wrecked. Whether a house stood or fell often depended on its location. Houses closer to the beach received the hurricane’s full brunt and were smashed by the combined effect of wind, tidal surge, and floating debris. Too, the inventiveness of the occupants therein helped save their homes. Residents cut holes in their floors to allow the water pressure to equalize so the houses would not be swept off their foundations. Construction was another factor. Smaller frame houses were less able to withstand the Storm than larger ones of brick or stone. However, Lucas Terrace Apartments, which was built of brick, had 80 rooms, and was located near the beach, collapsed. Eighty-six people died there. Only one room, which held 26 people, survived.
