Galveston’s public schools were heavily damaged or destroyed during the hurricane. Ball High School had $15,000 damage. A hallway collapsed at Rosenberg School, also known as First District School, killing several people. Bath Avenue School, also known as Second District School, had one wall torn open, exposing a collapsed floor that held bolted desks. Images of its buildings are among the most familiar 1900 Storm images. The school, built near the beachfront, was the only building in the zone of total destruction that was not completely ruined. Denver Resurvey School was completely destroyed. Central High School, which served the city’s African American population, suffered several thousands dollars’ worth of damage.
