Mission of the Galveston and Texas History Center

Researcher viewing GTHC documents The Galveston and Texas History Center's primary missions are to collect, preserve, organize, and service materials that document the history of Galveston and Texas. Its secondary missions include documenting the community through oral history, conducting public programming relating to the history of Galveston, and fostering professional development of its staff.
Collecting Scope

Our main acquisitions consist of:

  • Books with nearly 1,900 linear feet of rare, Galveston, and Texas publications.
  • Manuscript collection of approximately 25,000 linear feet.
  • Newspaper collections of approximately 1,400 linear feet including indexes to obituaries and articles.
  • Photographs, around 50,000
  • Maps, Approximately 25,000 maps and architectural drawings.
  • Oral histories, more than 150 oral histories.
  • Subject and vertical files, approximately 150 linear feet of subject files, pamphlet files and manuscript inventories.
